New Severn Crossing
New Severn Crossing

There are four crossings of the river Severn a few miles from Bristol, where road, railway and power lines gain access to South Wales ... the Newport area.

The New Severn Crossing is a cable stay bridge that carries the M4 Motorway (which runs from London) into South Wales

This first view of the new crossing taken from Severnbeach - the end of the railway branch from Bristol

Before the new crossing, the M4 crossed via the Severn Bridge - a suspension bridge. That's now a part of the M48 motorway. In fact, the bridge crossed from England to England - a further bridge a few hundred yards along crosses the river Wye, and that's where traffic enters Wales.

Th earliest fixed crossing of them all was the railway tunnel, engineered at great cost, and difficult to keep dry.
