I ran a Python course in Manchester a few mouths ago, and crossed over the Canal each morning on my way from my hotel to the offices of the company I was training. In days gone by, freight used to enter from Liverpool via the Manchester Ship Canal up to Salford, where it was transshipped into smaller craft for onward distribution
