Tcl and Expect - a great way to handle interaction
![]()
Do you have a command line based application that you run frequently? Always making the same inputs and responding
in the same way to its prompts? Like to save some time? Then use Expect. Expect is an application that's built on top
of Tcl and provides you with commands to spawn (start up) new processes that you wish to control, send them information
as if it was typed at the keyboard, and expect back certain specific responses. With an Expect program, you can also
look for a number of alternative responses, or even a response matching a particular pattern .... which means that you
can extend your application automation easily to take care of a wide variety of circumstances. This picture is of a
trainee on our public Tcl and Expect course, taken during a practical session.
