Both Perl and PHP (and Java too) support the -- or decrement operator - so that all three of the statements shown here on the whiteboard will have the same effect. We often have an interesting class discussion on style, as we teach not only the syntax of these languages but also their best application which is often forgotten about on other courses. We think it's notable that Python does NOT support the ++ or -- operators, and the class discusses!
