Perl is a great tool for handling huge data files
![]()
If you have too much data to read into a list in Perl, you can handle it using other parsing techniques. Perl has
other features that make it very good for handling huge data sets too - such as the ability to easily provide
progress reports or bars while a task is running, and the ability to receive external triggers so that your job
can provide you with an interim progess report upon request. The same mechanism allows you to trap interrupts
(such as someone trying to stop the job using [ctrl-C]) to avoid the accidental termination of a long job. These
techniques, and others that relate to the efficiency of large data handling tasks, are taught on our Perl for
Larger Projects course, and on custom courses as required.
