The best way to learn is to listen and then to try
![]()
In Perl, you can achieve the maximum of programming effect with the minimum of code, though whether it's wise to
do so in every circumstance is open to question. One of the most innovative approaches that Perl takes to saving
coding is "topicalization", where functions and operators that are not supplied with an explicit parameter telling
them on which data they should operate act on a special variable called $_ - or the default input and pattern
matching space. It might sound complicated, but it isn't once you get used to it - so on our Perl courses we
explain Topicalisation and $_, then we demonstrate it. Then we set our trainees a practical through which they
can try it for themselves, with assistance from the tutor if necessary.
