| SYNOPSIS |
UNIX is today's premier operating system for multiuser, multitasking environments. It lets many users share the resources of one computer, and lets one user perform several processes simultaneously. One of the world's most successful operating systems, UNIX recognizes over 200 commands. Many of the utilities and other software tools used by UNIX, such as spelling corrections, text editors, and graphics routines, are already built in as standard files. Because UNIX is an open system, you can customize it to fit your needs; you are not locked into an inflexible system. Some of UNIX's powerful features include vi and ed editors, redirection, background/foreground operation, electronic mail, shell scripts, FORTRAN and Pascal compilers, and file management.
This book includes hands-on examples, easily referenced command summaries, and a complete glossary of UNIX buzzwords. Berkeley-enhanced UNIX commands are also detailed.
